About the Roman Numeral Converter

Type a number to see it in Roman numerals, or type a Roman numeral to see the number. Handy for years on films and buildings, clock faces, book chapters, events — and checking a tattoo before it’s permanent.

How does the Roman Numeral Converter work?

Roman numerals use seven letters: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. Letters are added from largest to smallest, and a smaller letter before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.

Each place — thousands, hundreds, tens and ones — is written separately and joined, so 2026 = MM + XX + VI = MMXXVI.

Frequently asked questions

Why only up to 3,999?

The standard form allows no more than three of the same letter in a row, so 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX) is the largest number it can write. Larger numbers used a bar over letters to multiply by 1,000.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Romans had no numeral for zero.

Why do some clocks show IIII instead of IV?

It’s a long-standing clockmakers’ tradition, partly for visual balance. In standard Roman numerals 4 is IV.
