About the Image Compressor

How does the Image Compressor work?
Images are re-encoded at the quality you choose. JPG and WebP use lossy compression that discards detail the eye barely notices; around 70–80% quality usually looks identical to the original at a fraction of the size.
The biggest savings come from reducing dimensions: a 4000-pixel-wide phone photo shown at 1200 pixels on a website carries eleven times more pixels than needed.
If a result would be larger than the original, the original is kept.
Tips
- For websites, WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality.
- Keep PNG for screenshots, logos and images with transparency; use JPG or WebP for photos.
