Buying a laptop or computer
Start from what you’ll do — study, office work, photo and video editing or gaming — and buy the specification that needs, rather than the biggest numbers.
What to check before you buy
- Memory (RAM): 8 GB is a minimum for everyday use; 16 GB is more comfortable for multitasking.
- Storage: an SSD makes the biggest difference to speed; check the capacity you need.
- Screen size and weight matter if you carry it every day.
- Check battery life in independent reviews, not only the maker’s figure.
- Check the ports you need, or budget for adapters.
Prices and stock change often. Always confirm the final price, delivery cost and returns policy on the retailer’s website before paying.
