Microphone Test

Check your microphone is working before a call: see the input level live and record a 5-second clip to hear yourself.

  1. Press Test my microphone
  2. Allow access when your browser asks
  3. Speak and watch the level — then record a clip to hear yourself
Runs in your browser. Your data and files never leave your device.

About the Microphone Test

Make sure your microphone works before a Zoom, Teams or Google Meet call, a recording or a game. Press the button, allow microphone access and speak — the bar moves when your voice is picked up.

Record a 5-second clip and play it back to hear how you sound, and switch between microphones if you have more than one.

How does the Microphone Test work?

Your browser passes the microphone signal to this page, which measures its level many times a second. The sound is analysed on your device and never uploaded.

Tips

  • If the bar doesn’t move, check the mute switch on your headset and your computer’s sound settings.
  • Peaks near the top sound distorted on calls — move back or lower the input volume.
  • If another app is using the microphone, close it first.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my browser ask for permission?

Websites can’t use your microphone without it. You can withdraw access at any time from the icon in the address bar.

Is my audio recorded?

Only if you press Record, and then the clip stays on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

My mic works here but not in Zoom or Teams — why?

Check that the app has the same microphone selected in its own audio settings, and that your operating system allows that app to use the microphone.
