How to Merge PDF Files Into One (Free, No Software)

Updated 27 September 2026 · 3 min read

Job applications, tax returns, rental applications and university submissions often ask for “a single PDF”. If your documents are spread across several files, merging them takes less than a minute. This guide shows how to combine PDFs for free, get the pages in the right order, and tidy up the final file before you send it.

How to merge PDFs, step by step

  1. Open Merge PDF.
  2. Add all the files you want to combine. You can select several at once or drag them in together.
  3. Use the up and down arrows to put the files in order. The first file in the list becomes the first pages of the new document.
  4. Optionally, type a page range next to a file (for example 1-3, 5) to include only those pages.
  5. Select Merge, then download the combined PDF.
  6. Open the result and scroll through it once to check every page is there and facing the right way.

Putting pages in the right order

Merging keeps each file’s pages together. If you need to move individual pages — for example, placing a signed page from one file into the middle of another — merge first and then use Reorder PDF Pages to move pages into place.

Removing pages you don’t need

Bank statements and scanned forms often include blank backs, cover sheets or terms and conditions that nobody asked for. Remove them with Delete PDF Pages — select the pages, delete, download. If you only need a few pages from a long document, Extract PDF Pages is quicker.

Fixing sideways pages

Scans and phone photos are often rotated. Before sending, use Rotate PDF to turn individual pages the right way up. Rotation is saved in the file, so it will open correctly for everyone.

Merging photos and documents together

Need to add a photo of your ID or a receipt? Turn the image into a PDF first with JPG to PDF or PNG to PDF, then add it to the merge list like any other file. Word documents can be converted with Word to PDF.

Keeping the merged file small

Combining several scans can create a file too large to email or upload. If the finished PDF is over the limit, run it through the PDF Compressor. Most upload forms accept files between 2 and 10 MB.

A checklist before you submit

  • Every document the form asked for is included, in the order it asked for them.
  • No pages are upside down, cut off or blank.
  • Personal details you don’t need to share are covered — Redact PDF permanently removes them.
  • Signatures are in place. You can add one with Sign PDF.
  • The file name is clear, such as “Jane-Smith-Rental-Application.pdf”.
  • The file size is within the limit.

Is it safe to merge private documents online?

Documents like payslips, passports and tax returns are exactly what you should not upload to unknown servers. KitWren merges PDFs in your browser: the files are read and combined on your own device, and nothing is sent to us.

Frequently asked questions

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

Up to 50 files at a time. For very large jobs, merge in batches and then merge the results together.

Will merging reduce the quality?

No. Merging copies pages as they are, so text and images stay exactly the same.

Can I merge PDFs on my phone?

Yes. The tool works in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android — choose the files from your Files or Downloads app.

Does merging keep links and bookmarks?

Page content, including links on the page, is kept. Document-level bookmarks from the original files may not carry over.
