Sending money to India: what to know
Most transfers to India are paid into an Indian bank account in rupees. Ask your recipient for their IFSC code and account number, and whether to use an NRE or NRO account if they’re a non-resident Indian.
Getting a good deal
Compare what arrives, not the rate. A provider can advertise a great rate and charge a big fee, or advertise “no fee” and use a poor rate. The only fair comparison is how much your recipient actually receives.
Check the mid-market rate. The mid-market rate is the midpoint between buying and selling prices on the currency markets. It’s the benchmark: the closer a provider’s rate is to it, the less you pay in hidden margin.
Payment method changes the price. Paying by bank transfer is often cheaper than paying by card. Some providers also charge more for fast delivery or cash pickup.
Use licensed providers only. Send money only through banks and transfer companies licensed in your country. Never send money to someone you’ve only met online, or because someone is pressuring you to act quickly — these are common scams.
