About the GST / VAT Calculator

Add VAT, GST or sales tax to a price, or remove it from a tax-inclusive price. The standard rate for 70 countries — from the UK, EU and India to Australia, Japan, Mexico and South Africa — is built in, and your own country is picked automatically. Reduced rates, US state sales taxes and anything else can be entered as a custom rate.

Useful for invoicing, pricing and checking receipts.

How does the GST / VAT Calculator work?

Adding tax multiplies the net price by (1 + rate). Removing tax divides the gross price by (1 + rate) — you can’t simply subtract the rate from a tax-inclusive price.

For Australia’s 10% GST, the GST included in a price is one-eleventh of the total.

GST / VAT Calculator formula

tax-inclusive = net × (1 + r)
net = gross ÷ (1 + r)
tax included = gross × r ÷ (1 + r)

Example

$100 + 10% GST = $110.

GST included in $110 = $110 ÷ 11 = $10.

£240 including 20% VAT = £200 + £40 VAT.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I just take 10% off to remove GST?

Because the GST was added to the lower, pre-tax amount. 10% of $110 is $11, but the GST in $110 is only $10.

What’s the difference between GST, VAT and sales tax?

GST and VAT are both value-added taxes collected at each stage of supply; US sales tax is charged only on the final retail sale. The arithmetic for adding and removing them is the same.
