About the Income Tax Calculator

Estimate how much income tax you’ll pay and what you’ll take home, using the published tax brackets for Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States (federal) and New Zealand.

The result shows your income tax, levies such as the Medicare levy, National Insurance or FICA, your effective and marginal tax rates, and take-home pay per year, month and week.

How does the Income Tax Calculator work?

Income tax is progressive: each rate applies only to the slice of income inside its bracket, so moving into a higher bracket never reduces your take-home pay.

Allowances and deductions come off first — the UK personal allowance (which tapers away above £100,000) and the US standard deduction — before the brackets are applied.

Income Tax Calculator formula

tax = Σ (income in bracket × bracket rate)
effective rate = total tax ÷ gross income

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

The marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar of income. The effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income, which is always lower.

Will a pay rise push me into a higher bracket and lower my pay?

No. Only the part of your income above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate.

Does this include state taxes or deductions?

No. It uses standard allowances only and excludes state and local taxes, work deductions, offsets and student loan repayments.
