About the Retirement Calculator

See what your retirement savings could grow to by your chosen retirement age, and roughly how much yearly income that would support until the age you plan for — all shown in today’s dollars so you can compare it with your current costs.

How does the Retirement Calculator work?

Your current balance grows at the pre-retirement return with monthly contributions that rise each year. At retirement, the balance is converted to today’s money and drawn down evenly, earning the post-retirement return, until the “plan until” age.

Retirement Calculator formula

income = B × r ÷ ((1 − (1 + r)^−N) × (1 + r))

B is the balance at retirement in today’s money, r the real (after-inflation) return and N the number of years in retirement.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to retire?

A common rule of thumb is 60–70% of your pre-retirement income each year, but it depends on your housing, health and lifestyle. Government pensions may cover part of it.
