Navigating drawings: zoom, pan and views
Most of your time in AutoCAD is spent moving around the drawing. Learn the mouse moves and zoom commands that make navigation effortless.

- Fix a drawing that is ‘lost’ off screen
- Save named views for areas you return to
The mouse does most of the work
- Roll the wheel to zoom in and out around the cursor.
- Hold the wheel down and drag to pan.
- Double-click the wheel to zoom to extents — everything in the drawing.
Zooming changes only your view. The objects keep their real size; a 3600 mm wall is still 3600 mm.
The ZOOM command
Type Z and Enter, then choose an option:

“My drawing has disappeared”
Almost every beginner does this: you zoom a long way, or a stray object far away makes extents tiny. Fix it in order:
- Double-click the mouse wheel (Zoom Extents).
- If everything is now tiny, there is a stray object far away. Draw a crossing around the tiny area you don't want and look at what else is selected in Properties, or use
QSELECTto find it, then erase it.
- If zooming stops working smoothly, type
REGEN(RE) to regenerate the display.
Named views
For large drawings, save views of areas you revisit — Kitchen, Stair detail — with the VIEW command (View Manager › New). Restoring a named view is faster than zooming around, and views can be placed on layouts later.

Common mistakes
The wheel zooms in huge jumps or not at all.
Check the
ZOOMFACTORsystem variable (default 60) and tryREGEN.Pan with the wheel opens a menu instead.
Set the
MBUTTONPANsystem variable to 1.
Exercise
Find your way around
- Draw a rectangle about 10 000 × 6000 with
RECTANG(pick a point, then type@10000,6000). - Draw a small circle far away, e.g. at
500000,500000. - Double-click the wheel and see how small the rectangle becomes.
- Erase the far-away circle and zoom extents again.
- Zoom into one corner with Zoom Window, then use Zoom Previous to go back.
- Save a named view called Whole drawing.
You should end up with: You can always get back to your drawing, however lost you get.
