The BIM execution plan

In ISO 19650, a pre-appointment BEP is submitted with a tender to show how the team will meet the EIR. The post-appointment BEP is the detailed, agreed plan for delivery. Both answer: who produces what information, how, when, and to what standard?

• Project information, goals and BIM uses.

• Roles and responsibilities, including an information manager and model owners.

• Standards: naming, classification (e.g. Uniclass), drawing and modelling standards.

• Software and versions for each party; exchange formats (native, IFC version, PDF).

• Coordinates: origin, survey point, true north, units, levels naming.

• Model breakdown: which models exist (by discipline, zone, level) and who owns them.

• Level of Information Need per stage.

• Exchange schedule, coordination meeting cadence and clash tolerances.

• CDE workflow, approvals and security.

• Quality assurance: checks before sharing.

Decide early how the building is split into models — architecture per building or per level, structure, each services discipline, site — and who owns each. Good breakdown keeps files workable and responsibilities clear.

A BEP that's written once and filed fails. Keep it short, make the coordinate and naming sections easy to find, review it at each stage, and version it in the CDE. Onboard every new team member with it.
