English has only 5 vowel letters, but about 12 vowel sounds and 8 diphthongs (two vowel sounds together, like in day or go). So each vowel letter can make several sounds.
Short and long vowels make a big difference to meaning:
- /ɪ/ ship, sit, live — /iː/ sheep, seat, leave
- /ʊ/ full, pull — /uː/ fool, pool
- /æ/ hat, cat — /ɑː/ heart, cart
- /ɒ/ hot, cot — /ɔː/ caught, short
Long vowels are held a little longer and the mouth is often more tense: smile a little for /iː/ in sheep, relax for /ɪ/ in ship.
A “magic e” at the end often makes the vowel say its letter name: hat → hate, kit → kite, hop → hope, cut → cute.
The most common sound in English is schwa /ə/ — a short, relaxed “uh”. It appears in unstressed syllables: the a in about, the er in teacher, the o in today.
