Mixed conditionals
Mix time frames in conditionals: past condition with present result, and present condition with past result.

Learn
Past → present: If + past perfect, would + verb: If I had taken* that job, I would be rich now.* (I didn’t take it; I’m not rich.)
Present → past: If + past simple, would have + participle: If I were* more organised, I wouldn’t have missed the deadline.* (I’m not organised in general; I missed it.)
Use them to talk about regrets and how the past has shaped the present, or how a general truth explains a past event.
Other modals are possible: If she’d studied medicine, she might be* a doctor now.*

- If I hadn’t moved to Berlin, I wouldn’t know my partner.
- If he weren’t so stubborn, he would have listened.
- We’d be at the beach now if we hadn’t missed the train.
- If I didn’t have a car, I couldn’t have driven you home.
