Advanced inversion

Master rare and literary inversion: conditional inversion with should/were/had, so/such inversion, comparative inversion and inversion after place and ‘as’.

So/Such inversion: *So severe was the storm that flights were cancelled. Such was his anger that he left without a word.*

Negative conditional inversion: *Had it not been for her quick thinking… Were it not for… Should you not wish to proceed…* (Note: no contraction: Hadn’t it been ✗.)

Comparative and ‘as’ inversion (formal): Rural areas suffered, as did* the cities. The results were better than were expected. She was worried, as were we all.*

Other literary patterns: Neither/Nor (He didn’t call, nor did he write), Only by + -ing (*Only by working together can we succeed), In no way / At no time, and Here/There + comes/goes* (Here comes the bus).

Examples

So great was the demand that tickets sold out in minutes.
Had it not been for the rain, the match would have finished.
Wages fell, as did living standards.
Only by listening carefully can we understand the problem.
