Spontaneous discussion
Handle unprepared discussion on any topic: think on your feet, structure answers instantly, handle curveballs and recover gracefully.
In this lesson you will
- Structure spontaneous answers quickly
- Handle unexpected questions and topic shifts
- Recover from mistakes naturally
Learn
Instant structure: PREP — Point, Reason, Example, Point again. Or past–present–future, or one side / other side / my view.
Curveballs: acknowledge and reframe: That’s not something I’ve considered before, but my instinct is… ; I’d approach that from a slightly different angle…
Buying thinking time with content: restate or narrow the question: If we’re talking about cities specifically… ; It depends whether we mean X or Y.
Recovery: self-correct smoothly (— or rather —, let me rephrase that), and don’t apologise excessively. Proficient speakers make small slips too; recovery is what matters.
Examples
- My instinct is that it’s positive — mainly because… — take, for example… — so overall, yes.
- It depends whether we mean formal education or learning in general.
- It was in 2018 — or rather 2019 — that…
- Let me rephrase that more precisely.
