Test day: what to expect
What to expect on IELTS test day: ID, check-in, rules, order of sections, and how to stay calm and focused.
In this lesson you will
- Know what to bring and what not to bring
- Know the usual order and procedures
- Manage stress on the day
Learn
Bring the same valid ID you used to register (usually a passport or national ID card). Check your confirmation email for arrival time and any specific instructions from your test centre.
Not allowed: phones, smartwatches and other electronic devices, notes, and usually food or drink in the test room (water in a clear bottle may be allowed — check). Belongings are stored outside.
Order: Listening, Reading and Writing are usually taken together without breaks; Speaking may be on the same day or up to a few days before or after. On paper, use a pencil for Listening and Reading; on computer, type answers directly.
Stay calm: sleep well, arrive early, eat beforehand, and focus on one section at a time — forget a difficult section once it’s over. Rules vary by centre and change over time; always follow the official IELTS guidance and your centre’s instructions.
Examples
- Checklist: passport, confirmation email, clear water bottle (if allowed), arrive early.
- Mindset: “That reading passage was hard — but it’s finished. Now Writing.”
