Elm Street Community Garden — information for new plot holders
Elm Street Community Garden has 40 plots, each measuring roughly three metres by five. Plots are rented for one year at a time, from 1 March, for an annual fee of £45. Residents of the borough receive priority when plots become available; others may join the waiting list, which is currently about eighteen months long.
Plot holders are expected to keep their plot tidy and cultivated. If a plot is left unworked for eight weeks during the growing season, the committee will send a reminder, and if there is still no improvement after a further four weeks, the plot may be offered to the next person on the list.
Tools can be borrowed from the shared shed, which is opened with a combination lock; the code is changed every January and is sent to plot holders by email. Water is available from the taps between April and October only. To save water, hoses are not permitted; please use watering cans.
Bonfires are not allowed at any time. Green waste should be placed in the compost bays at the north end of the garden, while plastic and other rubbish must be taken home. The garden holds a work day on the first Sunday of every month, when plot holders help with shared areas such as paths and the orchard. Attendance is not compulsory but is strongly encouraged.
