Pronunciation for IELTS

Pronunciation for IELTS: clarity over accent — word stress, sentence stress, chunking, intonation and key sounds.

In this lesson you will

  • Understand that clarity matters more than accent
  • Use word and sentence stress
  • Use chunking and intonation for meaning

Learn

IELTS doesn’t require a British or American accent. The criterion is about how easy you are to understand and how well you use pronunciation features — stress, rhythm, intonation and individual sounds.

Word stress: PHOtograph, phoTOgraphy, photoGRAPHic; ECOnomy, ecoNOMic. Wrong stress can make words hard to recognise.

Sentence stress and chunking: stress content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives) and pause between meaningful chunks: I think / the main problem / is the cost of housing.

Intonation: falling for statements and wh-questions; rising for yes/no questions and lists before the last item; fall-rise for reservation (It’s \/ good, but…). Work on individual sounds that affect clarity (e.g. th, v/w, l/r, final consonants).

Examples

  • Chunking: Last summer / I went to Italy / with my family.
  • Contrastive stress: I didn’t say SHE did it — I said HE did.
  • List intonation: We need eggs ↗, milk ↗ and bread ↘.
