Writing Task 1: the overview
The overview is the most important paragraph in Academic Task 1. Learn what to include and how to structure the whole report.

Academic Task 1 asks you to summarise visual information in at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. You are not asked for opinions or reasons.
Structure: (1) Introduction — one sentence paraphrasing what the chart shows. (2) Overview — two or three sentences about the most important trends, differences or stages, without numbers. (3) Body 1 and Body 2 — details with data, grouped logically.
Without a clear overview it is difficult to reach a high band for Task Achievement. Look for: the highest/lowest, the biggest change, general trends (up, down, stable), and anything that stands out.
Group the data: e.g., categories that rose vs categories that fell, or the first half of the period vs the second. Compare rather than list every number.
Examples
- Introduction: “The bar chart compares the proportion of workers using five forms of transport in one city in 2005 and 2025.”
- Overview: “Overall, driving remained the most common way to commute, although its share fell, while cycling and rail use grew considerably.”
- Grouping: “By contrast, the share of people taking the train rose from 12% to 20%…”
