Interface, viewports and precision

Rhino is command-line driven and designed for precision. Learn its viewports, snaps, construction planes and the Gumball so every point you pick is exact.

In this lesson you will

  • Navigate the four viewports
  • Use commands, options and repeat
  • Draw precisely with osnaps, Ortho and coordinates
  • Transform objects with the Gumball and CPlanes

Viewports and navigation

The default layout has Top, Front, Right and Perspective viewports. Right-drag pans in parallel views and rotates in Perspective; the wheel zooms; double-click a viewport title to maximise it. ZoomExtents (or the Zoom Extents button) fits everything.

Commands

Type commands at the command line — Line, Polyline, Circle, Move. Rhino autocompletes. Options appear in the prompt as clickable words. Enter, Space or a right-click repeats the last command; Esc cancels. Every toolbar button is just a command, so learning names makes you faster.

Precision

  • Osnaps (bottom bar): End, Near, Point, Mid, Cen, Int, Perp, Tan, Quad. Tick a few; Alt temporarily disables them.
  • Ortho (F8 or Shift held) constrains to 90° steps; Planar keeps points on the same height.
  • Coordinates: type 0,0,0 for absolute, r10,5 for relative, <45 to lock an angle, or type a distance to lock length while you pick direction.
  • SmartTrack gives temporary tracking lines from snapped points.

Construction planes and the Gumball

Each viewport draws on its construction plane (CPlane). Set a CPlane to an object's face with CPlane › Object to draw on angled surfaces. The Gumball widget on a selection moves (arrows), rotates (arcs) and scales (squares) directly; click a handle and type a value for precision.

Common mistakes

  • Objects drawn at the wrong height.

You picked in a different viewport's CPlane; use Planar or snap to existing geometry.

  • Snaps grab the wrong point.

Reduce active osnaps or use a one-off snap.

Exercise

Precise drafting

  1. Draw a 600 × 400 rectangle from 0,0,0.
  2. Draw a circle centred on its midpoint of one side.
  3. Set the CPlane to a sloped face of a box and draw on it.
  4. Move and rotate an object with the Gumball using typed values.

You should end up with: Exact geometry drawn in several planes.
