Time management across the test

Time management across the TOEFL: pacing short tasks, moving on, and keeping energy for the whole test.

In this lesson you will

  • Pace many short tasks
  • Know when to move on
  • Manage energy and focus

Learn

The 2026 format has many short, timed tasks. Each has its own timer, so pace within each task rather than across a long section.

Move on: if a reading or listening item is taking too long, choose the best option and continue — later items still count, and the test is adaptive.

Writing and speaking: plan briefly, use most of the time producing, and keep a few seconds to finish your sentence cleanly.

Energy: sleep well, eat beforehand, and reset between tasks with a slow breath. Don’t dwell on a difficult item.

Examples

  • Stuck on a vocabulary item → best guess, next.
  • Speaking timer nearly finished → close with “So overall, …”.
  • Between tasks: one slow breath, eyes on the next instruction.
