Project 3: Office fit-out layout
Lay out a small office inside an existing shell: partitions, meeting rooms, rows of workstations with arrays, and a furniture schedule extracted from block data.
By the end of this project you will
- Work over a referenced base building
- Lay out workstations efficiently with arrays
- Use attribute blocks and extract a schedule
- Present zones with light hatching
Project brief
Objective
Produce a 1:100 office fit-out plan with a furniture schedule generated from block attributes.
The brief
An existing office floor, internal size 24 000 × 12 000 mm, with the entry at one end. Provide: reception, two meeting rooms (one for 6, one for 10), 20 workstations (1600 × 800 desks), a kitchen, a print/store room and two accessible toilets. Keep a clear main corridor at least 1200 wide (check the local building code for required widths).
A common rule of thumb is 8–12 m² of total office floor area per person — check that your layout lands in a sensible range.
Step 1 — Base building as an xref
- 1Draw the shell (external walls, columns at 6000 centres, core) in
P3-base.dwg. - 2In
P3-fitout.dwg, attach P3-base as an overlay at 0,0 and fade it. - 3Create fit-out layers: I-PART (partitions), I-FURN, I-EQPM, I-ANNO.
Step 2 — Partitions and rooms
- 1Draw partitions (100 thick) for meeting rooms, kitchen, store and toilets.
- 2Place doors; meeting rooms get 920 doors.
- 3Check accessible toilet dimensions against your local code and a manufacturer's layout.
Step 3 — Workstations with arrays
- 1Create a desk block with a chair, and attributes TYPE and ID.
- 2Place one pair of back-to-back desks, then
ARRAY› Rectangular to make rows, keeping 1500 between rows for circulation. - 3Edit the array to adjust spacing until all 20 fit with clear walkways.
- 4Explode the array only if you need to renumber individual desks (or number them with attributes afterwards).
Step 4 — Present and schedule
- 1Add a light solid hatch (low transparency) to meeting rooms and reception to show zones; send hatches to back.
- 2Label rooms with names and areas.
- 3Use Data Extraction to create a furniture schedule table from the desk and chair blocks: type and count.
- 4Place the table on the layout beside the plan.
Your task
Test the layout
- Calculate floor area per workstation.
- Draw a 1500 circle in front of key doors to check turning space.
- Move one meeting room and confirm the schedule still counts correctly after refreshing.
You should end up with: A workable office plan and an accurate schedule.
