Project 2: A dimensioned residential floor plan

Draw a three-bedroom house plan to a professional standard: blocks for doors and windows, full dimensioning, room labels with areas, and a scaled A3 sheet plotted to PDF.

Project brief

Objective

Produce an A3 PDF of a fully dimensioned and annotated three-bedroom house plan at 1:100, using layers, blocks, annotative styles and a layout.

Skills you need

The brief

A single-storey house, external footprint about 15 000 × 11 000 mm. Rooms: open-plan kitchen/living/dining (about 45 m²), three bedrooms (main about 14 m² with a walk-in robe and ensuite; two at about 11 m²), a bathroom, a laundry, an entry and a hallway. External walls 250, internal 90 plus linings (use 110 overall).

Sketch the layout on paper first. Good plans keep bedrooms together away from living areas, give wet rooms (bathroom, ensuite, laundry, kitchen) shared walls where possible, and keep the hallway short.

Step 1 — Start from your template

  1. 1Start a new drawing from the template you built (or set up layers, text, dimension and multileader styles now).
  2. 2Set annotation scale 1:100.
  3. 3Save as P2-house.dwg.

Step 2 — Walls

  1. 1Draw the external walls as an offset pair of polylines.
  2. 2Draw internal walls from centrelines offset 55 each side, erase centrelines, trim junctions.
  3. 3Check room sizes against your sketch with DIST and adjust with STRETCH.

Step 3 — Blocks

  1. 1Insert your door blocks (or a dynamic door) at every door, on A-DOOR.
  2. 2Create window blocks for your wall thickness and insert them on A-GLAZ.
  3. 3Add kitchen benches, bathroom fixtures and a few furniture blocks on A-FURN.
  4. 4Tag each door with a numbered tag block (D01, D02…).

Step 4 — Dimensions and annotation

  1. 1Dimension each external wall: a chain to openings and wall junctions, then an overall dimension.
  2. 2Add internal dimensions for key rooms.
  3. 3Place room tags with name and area (use an Area field on a room boundary for automatic areas).
  4. 4Add two or three multileader notes, e.g. Ceiling height 2700 unless noted.
  5. 5Add a north point.

Step 5 — Sheet and plot

  1. 1On an A3 layout, insert your title block and fill in project, drawing title, scale and sheet number A-101.
  2. 2Create a 1:100 viewport; lock it.
  3. 3Freeze A-FURN in the viewport if you want a construction version.
  4. 4Plot to PDF at 1:1 with your page setup and check it.

Your task

Variation

  1. Produce a second layout, A-102 Furniture plan, with furniture on and dimensions frozen in its viewport.
  2. Publish both sheets into one PDF.

You should end up with: Two sheets from one model with different layers visible.
