Sheet organisation and sheet sets
A project can have hundreds of sheets. Consistent file structure, sheet numbers and a sheet set keep them organised, numbered correctly and quick to publish.

Plan the set first
Before drawing sheets, list them: cover and index, site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules. Number them with a clear system — for example A-101 (A = architectural, 1 = plans series, 01 = sheet). A drawing register (list of sheets with revisions) is issued with every set. File structure
Two common approaches:
- Model files + sheet files: the building lives in model DWGs (plan, elevations) that are xref'd into sheet DWGs, one sheet per file. Scales well for teams.
- Several layouts in one file: simpler for small projects, but files get big and only one person can edit at a time.
Whichever you choose, keep folders consistent: /Models, /Sheets, /Xrefs, /Issued/2026-09-27 Tender.
The Sheet Set Manager
The Sheet Set Manager (Ctrl+4, SHEETSET) organises layouts from many drawings into one set with subsets (Plans, Elevations…). It stores sheet numbers and titles as properties that title blocks and callouts read through fields, so renumbering a sheet updates every reference to it. It can create new sheets from your template, insert a sheet list table, and publish the whole set in one go.
Availability of the Sheet Set Manager has differed between AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT over the years — check your version. Without it, use consistent layout names, fields and PUBLISH lists.
Issuing the set
- 1Update the revision on each changed sheet and in the register.
- 2Run
AUDITandPURGEon sheet files. - 3Publish the set (or subset) to PDF.
- 4Check the PDFs.
- 5Save a copy of the issued PDFs and DWGs in a dated Issued folder — never overwrite an issue.

Common mistakes
Sheet numbers typed in title blocks drift out of date.
Drive them from sheet set properties or fields.
Issued PDFs overwritten by later changes.
Keep dated issue folders; issued documents are a record.
Exercise
Set up a small drawing set
- List a six-sheet set with numbers and titles.
- Create a sheet set (or equivalent layouts) using your template.
- Add sheet number and title fields to the title block.
- Insert a sheet list table on the cover sheet.
- Publish the set to one PDF and store it in a dated Issued folder.
You should end up with: A numbered set with an automatic sheet list.
