Writing for different audiences
Adapt the same content for different audiences and formats: experts, the public, executives, children — adjusting depth, vocabulary, structure and tone.
In this lesson you will
- Analyse audience needs
- Adapt depth, vocabulary and structure
- Rewrite one message for several audiences
Learn
Audience analysis: What do they already know? What do they need to do or decide? How much time do they have? What do they care about?
Experts: precise terminology, methods, caveats. General public: plain language, concrete examples, relevance to daily life. Executives: bottom line first, options, costs, risks, recommendation. Children: short sentences, familiar words, analogies, a friendly tone.
Format matters: a report, email, social media post, press release or FAQ each has conventions of length, structure and tone.
Keep accuracy: simplification must not distort. Vaccines train your immune system is simple and accurate; vaccines make you immune to everything is not.
Examples
- Expert: The intervention produced a statistically significant reduction in HbA1c (p < 0.01).
- Public: People in the programme had better blood-sugar control.
- Executive: The programme works and saves £2m a year. Recommend national rollout.
- Child: The programme helped people keep their bodies healthy.
