This, that, these, those

Point to things near and far, singular and plural.

The rules

This (singular) and these (plural) = near you: This coffee is hot. These shoes are comfortable.

That (singular) and those (plural) = far from you: That building is old. Those people are tourists.

They can go before a noun or stand alone: Is this yours? What’s that? On the phone or when introducing: This is Maria. That is also used for things just said: That’s a great idea!

Common mistakes

  • ✗ This shoes are new.

    ✓ These shoes are new.

    Plural noun → these.

  • ✗ Those is my car.

    ✓ That is my car.

    Singular → that.
