TimeLiner: 4D simulation
TimeLiner links model elements to the construction programme so you can watch the building go up — a powerful way to check sequencing and communicate with the whole team.

What 4D shows
A 4D simulation shows which parts of the building exist on each date. It reveals sequencing problems (a slab poured before its columns), site logistics issues and progress against programme, and helps explain the plan to clients and trades.
Tasks
Create tasks in TimeLiner manually or import them from scheduling software (Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, CSV and others) through Data Sources. Each task has planned and optionally actual dates and a task type: Construct, Demolish or Temporary.
Attaching
- 1Build search sets per work package — e.g. L1 Columns, L1 Slab, L2 Columns.
- 2Attach each set to its task (right-click › Attach Current Search), or use Auto-Attach Using Rules when set and task names match.
- 3Check for unattached elements and empty tasks.
Simulating
Task types control appearance: Construct items appear green while in progress then take their model colour; Demolish items turn red then disappear; Temporary items (scaffold, cranes) appear then go. Play the simulation, adjust Settings (interval, overlay text), and Export Animation to video.

Common mistakes
Whole building appears on day one.
Elements aren't attached, or the view isn't set to hide unstarted items.
Models aren't split finely enough for the programme.
Agree zones and levels for modelling in the BEP.
Linking tasks to selection sets that go stale.
Use search sets so newly modelled elements join their tasks after a refresh.
Exercise
A four-week sequence
- Create tasks: foundations, ground columns, level 1 slab, level 1 columns, roof.
- Attach search sets to each task.
- Add a temporary task for scaffolding.
- Play and export a short animation.
You should end up with: A 4D simulation of the structure.
