Sections and elevations

Sections and elevations are generated automatically from the model. Learn to place them, control their depth and extent, and create callouts for enlarged details.

In this lesson you will

Sections

  1. 1View › Section.
  2. 2Click two points across the building in plan; the arrows show the viewing direction (flip them with the blue arrows).
  3. 3Drag the dashed far clip boundary to set how deep the section looks.
  4. 4Double-click the section head to open the view.
  5. 5Use Split Segment on a section line to jog it through key spaces.

Elevations

The template usually provides North, South, East and West elevations. Add more with View › Elevation; each marker can show up to four views. Place an elevation marker inside a room and tick the arrows to create interior elevations of each wall — the crop automatically fits the room.

Cropping and clipping

Every section and elevation has a crop region (show it with the crop icon) that limits the view. Keep crops tight to what the drawing needs; big crops slow views and clutter sheets. Turn off the crop region's visibility before placing on sheets.

Callouts

A callout (View › Callout) creates an enlarged view of part of a plan or section — e.g. a 1:20 stair or 1:5 wall detail. It's a real view of the model at a larger scale and finer detail level, where you add detail components and annotation. The callout bubble on the parent view automatically references the sheet it's placed on.

Common mistakes

  • Section shows the whole building behind the cut.

    Pull in the far clip.

  • Interior elevation crop is wrong.

    Adjust the crop region; check room-bounding walls and ceiling heights.

Exercise

Sections and interior elevations

  1. Create a longitudinal section through the living area and stair, jogged through the bathroom.
  2. Set a sensible far clip.
  3. Create interior elevations for the kitchen.
  4. Create a 1:20 callout of the stair in the section.

You should end up with: Coordinated sections, elevations and a callout.
