Tags and annotation
Tags display information from elements — a door number, a wall type, a room name. Because they read parameters, they are always correct. Learn to tag quickly and consistently.

Tag by category
- 1Annotate › Tag by Category (TG).
- 2Hover over an element; the tag previews. Choose horizontal/vertical and whether to show a leader on the Options Bar.
- 3Click to place. If no tag family is loaded for that category, Revit asks you to load one.
Tag all
Tag All Not Tagged (Annotate tab) tags every visible element of chosen categories in the view in one go — all doors, all windows, all rooms. Then tidy positions.
What tags show
A tag family contains labels linked to parameters: a door tag shows Mark; a window tag often shows Type Mark; a wall tag shows Type Mark or type name; a room tag shows Name, Number and optionally Area. Edit the parameter (in the element or a schedule) and every tag updates. Never type over a tag with text.
Text and keynotes
Use Text (TX) for notes that don't come from elements. For material and component notes on details, Keynotes read a keynote file (a text file of codes and descriptions) so wording stays consistent and can be listed in a legend. Choose one note approach per project and apply it everywhere.

Common mistakes
Tag shows a question mark.
The parameter it reads is empty — fill it in.
Two doors with the same mark.
Revit warns about duplicate marks; renumber in a schedule.
Exercise
Tag the plan
- Use Tag All Not Tagged for doors and windows.
- Tag external and internal walls with a wall type tag.
- Rename a door's mark from its tag and check the schedule updates.
- Add one text note and one keynote.
You should end up with: A fully tagged plan where tags match the model.
