Model management and performance
Healthy models open fast, sync quickly and don't corrupt. Learn the maintenance routine that keeps Revit projects stable from concept to handover.

Warnings
Manage › Review Warnings lists issues like overlapping walls, duplicate instances, room separation overlaps and elements slightly off axis. Each is small; thousands slow the model and hide real problems. Fix warnings regularly, starting with duplicates and overlaps.
Purge, audit, compact
- Purge Unused removes unused families, types, materials and patterns (run more than once — purging reveals more unused items).
- Audit (tick when opening a file) scans and repairs database issues. Use it on problem files and before archiving.
- Compact (Save As › Options, or when syncing) reduces file size.
What makes models heavy
- Imported CAD (especially exploded) and large images.
- Overly detailed families and in-place families.
- Huge numbers of views and unused sheets.
- Groups used for large or nested arrangements.
- Unconstrained large sites and point clouds without management.
Link instead of import, keep families simple, delete working views, and unload links you don't need.
A health routine
- 1Weekly: review warnings; delete unneeded views; purge.
- 2At each milestone: audit, compact, check links and imports, check file size trend.
- 3Keep a log of model size and warning count — sudden jumps show where problems started.
- 4Archive milestone models detached and audited.

Common mistakes
Model opens slowly and syncs take minutes.
Check imports, heavy families, warnings, views and links; audit and compact.
Purging removes a type you needed later.
Keep standard types in the template; reload when needed.
Exercise
Health check your model
- Record file size and warning count.
- Fix all duplicate and overlap warnings.
- Delete unused working views and purge unused content twice.
- Save As with Compact and compare file size.
You should end up with: A leaner model and a baseline for tracking health.
