Project 1: Model a small residential building
Model a single-storey, one-bedroom house from scratch: set up levels, build walls, place doors and windows, add a floor and a roof, furnish it and create a floor plan and 3D view.
By the end of this project you will
- Set up a project with levels
- Model walls, openings, floor and roof accurately
- Furnish the house with components
- Produce a clean floor plan and 3D view
Project brief
Objective
Produce a complete Revit model of a small house with a clean floor plan view and a 3D view.
The brief
A single-storey house with internal dimensions of about 9000 × 7000 mm: living/kitchen, one bedroom and a bathroom. Ceiling height 2700; a gable roof at 22.5° with 600 overhangs.
Use your own external and internal wall types from the Walls lesson, 920 entry door, 820 internal doors, and windows sized to the rooms.
Step 1 — Project and levels
- 1New project from the Architectural Template; set units to mm.
- 2In the South elevation, rename Level 1 to Ground (0) and Level 2 to Roof at 2700.
- 3Save as
P1-small-house.rvt.
Step 2 — Walls
- 1On Ground, draw the external walls clockwise with Finish Face: Interior location line, Up to level: Roof, as a 9000 × 7000 internal rectangle.
- 2Draw the living/bedroom and bedroom/bathroom walls with the internal wall type.
- 3Check room sizes with temporary dimensions; adjust with Align or by typing dimension values.
Step 3 — Openings
- 1Place doors with DR, flipping swings sensibly; set distances with temporary dimensions.
- 2Place windows with WN; set sill heights (900 living, 900 bedroom, 1500 bathroom).
- 3Tag doors and windows.
Step 4 — Floor and roof
- 1Create the floor by picking the external walls.
- 2On the Roof level plan, create a Roof by Footprint picking the walls with 600 overhang; untick Defines Slope on the two short ends for a gable.
- 3Attach the external walls' tops to the roof.
Step 5 — Furnish and present
- 1Place kitchen, bathroom fixtures and furniture.
- 2Place rooms and name them.
- 3Duplicate the Ground plan as Ground - Presentation with furniture and room colour fill.
- 4Create a 3D view with a nice orbit angle and shaded style.
- 5Save.
Your task
Variation
- Change the roof to a hip roof and check the walls.
- Raise the Roof level to 3000 and confirm walls and roof follow.
- Swap a window type and see it update everywhere.
You should end up with: Confidence that the model behaves parametrically.
