Project: Run a coordination round

Act as BIM coordinator for one coordination round: federate the models, build sets, run focused clash tests, turn results into assigned issues and produce the meeting pack.

Project brief

Objective

Deliver one complete coordination round: a federated NWF, search sets, clash tests, grouped issues, a short 4D check and a meeting pack.

Skills you need

The brief

Use architectural, structural and services models for a small building — your own Revit models (with some services modelled) or published sample models you're licensed to use. The team meets fortnightly; you must deliver a coordination pack two days before the meeting.

Step 1 — Federate

  1. 1Export NWCs from coordination views with shared coordinates.
  2. 2Append, check alignment and units, save the NWF.
  3. 3Save viewpoints for each level and key area.

Step 2 — Sets and tests

  1. 1Build search sets per discipline and system.
  2. 2Write a clash matrix (types, tolerances, priorities).
  3. 3Create tests and add rules to remove false positives.

Step 3 — Issues

  1. 1Run tests; group results into issues.
  2. 2Assign each to a discipline with a due date and a clear comment.
  3. 3Colour systems with the Appearance Profiler for issue images.

Step 4 — Sequence check and pack

  1. 1Create a simple TimeLiner sequence of the structure and major services to check one installation order.
  2. 2Publish an NWD snapshot.
  3. 3Write a two-page pack: summary, top issues with images, counts per test, decisions needed.

Common mistakes

  • Moving consultant models in Navisworks to make them line up.

    Fix coordinates at export so every round aligns automatically.

  • Issuing hundreds of ungrouped clashes.

    Group into issues with owners, viewpoints and due dates.

  • Forgetting to keep a record of each round.

    Publish a dated NWD and report for every round.

Your task

Round two

  1. Fix three issues in the source models (or simulate fixes by moving elements).
  2. Re-export, refresh and re-run tests.
  3. Report which issues are resolved and what's new.

You should end up with: Evidence of the coordination cycle working.
