Checking and quality assurance
Errors in documents become costs on site. A disciplined checking process — self-check, peer check, coordination check — catches most of them before issue.
In this lesson you will
- Run a systematic self-check
- Organise peer and senior reviews
- Check coordination between disciplines
- Recognise the most common documentation errors
Three layers of checking
Self-check by the author against a checklist; peer or senior check by someone who didn't produce the drawings, marking up a print or PDF; coordination check between architecture, structure and services — ideally using a federated model and a drawing overlay.
Common errors
- Dimensions that don't add up, or strings that don't close.
- References to details or sections that don't exist or point to the wrong sheet.
- Door or window tags missing from schedules.
- Levels that disagree between plans, sections and elevations.
- Structure and services clashing with ceilings or openings.
- Notes contradicting the specification.
- Superseded information left on sheets.
A pre-issue checklist
- 1Title blocks: number, title, revision, status, date, scale correct.
- 2Register matches the sheets being issued.
- 3All references resolve.
- 4Dimensions checked on key plans.
- 5Tags and schedules match.
- 6Levels consistent across views.
- 7Clouds show only this revision's changes.
- 8PDF legible at intended print size.
Make it a habit
Record who checked what, keep marked-up check prints with the issue record, and feed recurring errors back into templates and standards so they stop happening.
Common mistakes
Checking on screen only.
Check a printed or full-screen PDF at the intended size; errors hide at small zoom.
Checking your own work as the final check.
Always have someone who didn't produce the drawings review them.
Fixing checker comments without recording them.
Keep the marked-up check set with the issue record.
Exercise
Check a set
- Take a small set (yours or a public one).
- Run the pre-issue checklist and record issues found.
- Classify each issue by type and suggest a process fix.
You should end up with: A marked-up check record and process improvements.
