Model a small commercial building on a structural grid: a curtain wall facade, a core with stair and lift, custom families, and templated views ready for documentation.

Project brief

Objective

Produce a well-organised commercial building model with a curtain wall facade, a core, one custom family and consistent, templated views.

Skills you need

The brief

A two-storey office building, 24 × 15 m, on a 6000 × 7500 structural grid. Ground: entry lobby, café tenancy, core (stair, lift, toilets) and office space. First: open office and meeting rooms. Floor-to-floor 3600. The street facade is fully glazed; other walls are masonry with punched windows.

Treat code requirements (egress, accessible toilets, lift size) as items to research for your region; the exercise is about modelling and organisation, not compliance advice.

Step 1 — Grid, levels and structure

  1. 1Create levels Ground, First, Roof and a Parapet reference level.
  2. 2Create grids 1–5 at 6000 and A–C at 7500.
  3. 3Place columns at grid intersections (Structure › Column › At Grids).
  4. 4Pin the grid.

Step 2 — Envelope

  1. 1Model masonry walls on three sides with a parapet.
  2. 2Model the street facade as a curtain wall with vertical grids on the column lines subdivided at 1500, a transom at each floor, mullions and a door panel at the entry.
  3. 3Add a flat roof with falls to a gutter.

Step 3 — Core and interiors

  1. 1Model the core walls, a stair, a lift shaft opening through both floors and toilets.
  2. 2Model partitions for meeting rooms and the café.
  3. 3Build a parametric workstation family (Family creation lesson) and place a layout on First.

Step 4 — Organisation

  1. 1Add a View Purpose parameter and organise the Project Browser.
  2. 2Create view templates for GA plans, furniture plans, RCPs and sections; assign them.
  3. 3Review warnings and purge.
  4. 4Create an axonometric 3D view with a section box through the core.

Your task

Facade option

  1. Create a design option with an alternative facade (e.g. vertical fins or a different mullion grid).
  2. Show both options side by side on a presentation sheet.

You should end up with: A model with a clean alternative for client review.
