Project 4: Architectural documentation set

Turn your two-storey house or commercial model into a complete, cross-referenced documentation set — the kind issued for approval or construction.

By the end of this project you will

Project brief

Objective

Issue a numbered, cross-referenced architectural documentation set as a single PDF with an automatic drawing register and one revision cycle.

Skills you need

The brief

Using your Project 2 or Project 3 model, produce a set containing at least: cover with register and location plan; site plan; floor plans; reflected ceiling plans; elevations; two sections; wall sections and at least three details; door and window schedules with a door type legend; a finishes schedule; and general notes. Then issue revision A, make changes, and issue revision B.

Step 1 — Plan the set

  1. 1List every sheet with a number and name (A-000 series general, A-100 plans, A-200 elevations, A-300 sections, A-500 details, A-600 schedules).
  2. 2Create all sheets up front with the title block.
  3. 3Create a sheet list schedule on the cover.

Step 2 — Views to standard

  1. 1Assign view templates to all documentation views.
  2. 2Dimension and tag plans consistently; add room tags with finishes.
  3. 3Create RCPs with ceiling types and lights.
  4. 4Create elevations and sections with levels, grids and material tags.

Step 3 — Details and schedules

  1. 1Create wall section callouts and at least three 1:5 or 1:10 details with detail components and keynotes.
  2. 2Build door, window and finishes schedules and a door type legend.
  3. 3Add a keynote legend By Sheet on detail sheets and general notes on A-001.

What a checker looks for

Senior staff and certifiers read sets quickly and look for the same things: Can I find every referenced drawing? Do plans, sections and elevations agree on heights and openings? Are every door and window scheduled, and do the marks match? Are fire, acoustic and waterproofing requirements shown where they apply? Are the notes consistent with the specification? Is the revision history clear?

Because Revit generates views from one model, most geometric disagreements disappear — but annotation, notes, 2D details and drafting views can still contradict each other. Spend your checking time there.

Step 4 — Check and issue

  1. 1Check every section and callout references a placed view.
  2. 2Set revision A (e.g. For approval) and export the set to one PDF into an Issued folder.
  3. 3Make three design changes, cloud them under revision B, and re-issue.
  4. 4Confirm the register and title blocks show the revisions.

Your task

Peer check

  1. Swap PDFs with a classmate or colleague and check each other's set using the checklist.
  2. Record issues as a numbered list and fix them before revision B.

You should end up with: A checked, revised, professional drawing set.
