Listening Part 3: Planning a student survey

Tutor: So, Leah and Omar, tell me about your survey for the transport project.

Leah: We want to find out how students travel to campus and why they choose that way.

Tutor: And how many people are you planning to ask?

Omar: We first said five hundred, but that seemed too ambitious for four weeks, so we’ve agreed on two hundred.

Tutor: Sensible. Will you interview people or use a questionnaire?

Leah: Interviews would give us richer answers, but they take too long. We’re going with an online questionnaire, with a few open questions at the end.

Tutor: Online surveys often have a low response rate. What will you do about that?

Omar: We thought of offering a prize draw, but the department doesn’t allow that. So we’ll ask lecturers to give us five minutes at the start of large lectures for students to fill it in on their phones.

Tutor: That’s a good idea. One more thing — make sure your questions don’t suggest an answer. ‘Don’t you agree that buses are too expensive?’ is a leading question.

Leah: Right — we’ll test the questions on a few friends first.
